According to Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida and Sony proper, the PS4 sold a million units in the first 24 hours that the system was available in North America. This news makes the PlayStation 4 the fastest selling console of all time, dethroning the previous king, the Sega Dreamcast.
As Sega will tell you, a great start doesn’t necessarily mean long term dominance, but it is hard to argue with the great start the PS4 has seen. Not to mention the system is only available in one region so far, and since Japan is Sony’s home turf, one would expect large sales numbers in the 2014 release there as well.
At any rate, the PS4 is off to a monstrous beginning, and Sony expects to see 5 million in sales worldwide by March 1, 2014. I think if the PS4′s availability holds up, we might see even larger sales numbers in Q1 2014.
Sony President and Group CEO Andrew House had this to say about the North American launch numbers:
“PS4™ was designed with an unwavering commitment to gamers, and we are thrilled that consumer reaction has been so phenomenal. Sales remain very strong in North America, and we expect continued enthusiasm as we launch the PlayStation 4 in Europe and Latin America on November 29. We are extremely grateful for the passion of PlayStation fans and thank them for their continued support.”
